Those Creative Spammers
Goldfarmers in World of Warcraft are becoming desperate as Blizzard has now inserted a new ‘text-filter on broadcast chat messages to prevent gold farmers from spamming users about their websites’ – I don’t get how it can work, but I guess it really does!
This just impressed me so! Dead gnomes dropping out of the sky to spell an url?! I’m sorry, that just blows me away! So now I guess WoWers will have to put up with rainy days of dead gnomes instead of text spam? I have such a hard time disrespecting such creativity, but then again I’m not a WoW’er so I’m not hassled with goldfarming spam. ;)

Machinima mashups
I’m sure that I can describe this as a distinctive genre within machinima – when using one game to parody (?) another game. Lovely the way that the gaming sound just makes it complete – would it ever work with a rock song? This is the mixing of gameplay mechanics (although is it gameplay mechanics if we’re just passively watching it?)to describe a story, in my opinion, so deserves it’s own genre type within machinima.
But then I get confused when watching this superb film (embedding disabled for some mysterious reason).
Ah – what’s the point of organising everything into definition boxes really?
WoW Machinima music contest
Pointed out by my darling sis – there’s a contest going on for a WoW machinima music video. It’s a collaboration between the band, The Ataris and Blizzard. There’s three The Ataris songs available to choose from and the winner gets a WoW keyboard thingy.
I’m interested to see how this works out – on several playing fields.
One – what does machinima look like restricted by rules?
Two – will The Ataris become a smashing hit because of the machinima music video?
I’m intrigued – and I’ll be paying close attention!
WoW machinima’ish news
I’m sure this is no news to all the WoW’ers out there – but I found this “Gnomeregan Gnews Gnetwork” – looks like it’s been around for a while and as far as I can gather it’s actually made by Blizzard. I gotta say I’m impressed. News from Azeroth machinima broadcasting style. I found the humor a bit stressful – but that may be because I’m not a WoW’er.
BBC on goldfarming
I’m a big fan of the BBC! Here’s a nice little segment on how and why virtual currency in WoW has become so popular. I really like it because it gets to the heart of the matter and doesn’t dwell on the dramatic realization that people are using real money to buy virtual things. It’s really to the point – and I’m so glad that they included a Blizzard representative that could voice their concerns with RMT. Thanks sis for sending it to me!
l33t WoW Machinima Musical humour
This is a lovely little music parody of the Muppet Show’s “Mahna Mahna” using l33t with WoW characters. And a touch of “Singing in the Rain”. Charming!
The Joy of Joichi Ito
Joi Ito is such a gem! He’s a joy to listen to and his thoughts encompass so much about what’s going on in cyberspace (although in this presentation he says he doesn’t believe in cyberspace anymore – and with good reasoning). I’m in awe of this man – smart, insightful and sees ‘the big picture’. I certainly enjoyed this presentation of WoW and hope you do, as well. He talks about everything, how players relate to each other, how ‘real’ the experiences are, the use of voice communication in MMORPGs, the interface design of a guild leader, the differences between Second Life and World of Warcraft , user-generated content and so much more.
